The Quebec Nordiques franchise first began play in the WHA league in 1972. After the league folded, the Nordiques (similar to other teams like the Winnipeg Jets) moved to the NHL in time for the 1979 season. The franchise lasted in Quebec until 1995. Like many other Canadian franchises in the early 90’s, the Nordiques fell victim to increased player salaries, and a weaker Canadian dollar. With the NHL expanding in numerous locations in the US market, Quebec found itself as one of the smallest markets for professional sports in North America. The team was moved to Denver, Colorado where they would become known as the Avalance and even win the Stanley Cup in the 1st year of existence.
The Nordiques franchise was never able to capture hockey’s biggest prize, but many of the games great players played in Quebec. Joe Sakic was arguably the most popular player for the Nordiques franchise which also turned out some of the games great stars of the 90’s in Peter Forsberg, and Mats Sundin. At one point Hall of Famers like Michel Goulet, Guy Lafleur, and Peter Stastny played for the Nordiques as well.
