Brief Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey History

Over the years since the Penguins became a part of the NHL in 1967, the Pittsburgh Penguins jersey has had many a change of logo. Most of the logos used a skating penguin within the logo to match the name and the sport. However, between 1992 and 2001 the skating penguin was replaced with a simple penguin in front of a triangle.

There has always been a triangle used within the logo and it started off as yellow, as a reference to the well known Golden Triangle which is in Pittsburgh city. During 2003 and 2008 the whole idea behind the logo was scrapped due to the belief that it looked ridiculous by the general manager at the time. Instead, the logo was simply the team name on an angle. From 2008 onwards, the team’s logo changed back to the 1968 logo and now, as of 2011 it is reverting back to the original logo from 1967 which is a skating penguin playing hockey with a scarf in front of a yellow triangle with Pittsburgh Penguins around it.

The logo is not the only common change in the Pittsburgh Penguins jersey, in 1980 there was an attempt to make all of Pittsburgh’s sporting teams to use the same colors, but this was changed again in 1993. The team currently plays in powder blue, navy blue and white.
