Brief Philadelphia Flyers Jersey History

All ice hockey teams have a history. Some have an interesting history of how they first became a team, while other might have a cool story about where they train and play. The Philadelphia Flyers jersey is the cool piece of history for this team. In 1966, Bill Putnam announced a new contest to name a team with the colors of orange, black and white. Who was Bill Putnam? A member of a group that had been selected to be one of the new NHL franchises and it just happened to be in Philadelphia.

The colors were decided due to the influence of Bill’s alma mater, the University of Texas, which were white and orange, and the Philadelphia Quaker’s team colors, which were black and orange. Acme Markets, a chain of grocery stores, sponsored the contest, which was released on July 12th of that year. A number of prizes were offered from a color television to single tickets for games. It was a 9-year-old boy who won the naming of the team, which was spelled Fliers.

The logo for the Philadelphia Flyers jersey was designed by Mel Richmann Inc., an advertising firm in Philadelphia and is a winged P to represent the speed of the game, also something that the name also represented. A 3-D logo was used on the third version of the jerseys, which were used between 2002 and 2007.
