Brief Montreal Canadiens Jersey History
As the only French-Canadian team in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens are commonly called Les Canadiens de Montréal. They are one of the oldest teams in the NHL after being founded in 1909. The French spelling, Canadiens, has always been used even in English as it is a part of their history as well as the Montreal Canadien jersey which holds true to French-Canadian colors.
The main colors of red, blue and white have been used as the main colors since 1914 and are important to the French-Canadian culture. In fact, red is the predominant color for all home games with four stripes in blue and white; on the chest, across the waist and on each arm. The away jersey uses mainly white rather than red, with the red replacing the white stripes. The shoulders of the away jersey are red because it is such an important color for Canadians in general. The team has not updated their team sweaters since 1952 and that was the only change since 1914.
The logo on the Montreal Canadien jersey is one of the more easily recognizable logos throughout the NHL with a simple C and H, which has been in use since 1917 and through only one slight change in 1953. The C stands for Canadien while the H stands for Hockey since the official team name is Club de hockey Canadien.
