The Hartford Whalers franchise was established in 1972 and played in the now defunct WHA hockey league. After the WHA shut its doors, the Whalers (similar to other teams like the Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques) moved to the NHL in time for the 1979 season. In the NHL, the Whalers did not have as much success as they did in the WHA but developed a very passionate fan base. Still to this day, the rivalry between the Whalers and Bruins should not be forgotten! Due to money disputes over the construction of a new arena using tax payers money, the Whalers would ultimately end up moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in time for the 1997 hockey season. They would become known as the Hurrcianes.

Numerous great players played for the Whalers at one time or another. Hall of famers like Paul Coffey, Dave Keon, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, and Ron Francis all donned the Whalers jersey at one point or another. Arguably, the most popular player during the Whalers period was Ron Francis and when traded to Pittsburgh in 1992 seemed to absolutely deflate the franchise.
